    Dr. Washam

    Others:

    Absent:

    Dr. Roach

Dean Duggar called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.

    CLARIFICATION OF MERIT EVALUATION DOCUMENT

Dr. Roe discussed the Merit Evaluation Document with the committee. He passed out a copy of the adjustments to the committee and asked that they review the document and let him know if there are any other adjustments to be made or if everyone is in agreement as is.

FACULTY AWARDS (TEACHING, RESEARCH AND SERVICE)

Dr. Roe asked for any nominations. Deadline is tomorrow but extended the deadline to Wednesday of next week, March 27th. Dr. Washam has one nomination, Dr. Frey has one and Dr. Seydel has two.

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP EMERALD GALA

Carleen thanked everyone for their participation and helping in the clean up afterwards. $5,300 was cleared for scholarships from the Gala. One suggestion regarding the Gala was not to have it held on a Thursday night.

    THE BUSINESS CONNECTION

Carleen stated that she needs an outstanding faculty member from the Management/Marketing Department for the Business Connection. International Business focus is the theme for this edition. Need a backup for an undergraduate International student graduate if she doesn’t hear from the one she’s trying to contact. John Tipton passed away and she would like to include something in this edition on him. Alumni Breakfast is scheduled for Oct 19th. She will do a piece on the capital campaign.

    SR. PREVIEW DAY

Carleen discussed Sr. Preview Day which is next Tuesday and she has talked to all the chairs. Should have 20 students that claim to be business majors out of 200 signed up. However, there’s quite a few that are undeclared majors so she will need two rooms. A rep (Carleen, Sandra Bevill and Natasha) from our college is to meet the students at the tent at 1:10 and bring them over to the business building.

    COLLEGE OF BUSINESS HONORS BANQUET

Dr. Roe announced the Distinguished Alumni and Beta Gamma Sigma Honoree and Becky is checking on whether Dr. McDaniel can be inducted as an Honorary Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Member . Need all the departmental awards. Dr. Seydel suggested that everyone should verify students are really what they are on the lists because some are on the lists that shouldn’t be on them.

Dean Duggar discussed developing a 5th PhD program on campus. The President’s objective is to become a Carnegie II institution which means we would have to have 5 PhD programs on campus. Move to a PhD or DBA in Information Systems. Revitalize PhD in Information Systems Management. Dean Duggar has requested to look at outside evaluations on this. Will need to ask for additional faculty to work in this area. Horizon Institute – money doesn’t start flowing until January.

1- Look at someone who is good at involving others, writing grants, etc.

2- Look at existing faculty or new faculty – bring in with 9 month academic budget and overlay it with the balance of the institution.

These are the two directions we can look at in strengthening our technology use and program and enhancing our technology degree.

If PhD is approved, the university has been putting some money into it where we could offer 15 professorships/fellowships. There is a thesis option in the sciences or 9 hours of electives.

Conference with President and VP on the capital campaign next week to get going instead of waiting – to try to solve some issues that are holding up the campaign. There are some issues on the building as well.

Dr. Seydel asked regarding Fellowships – do we need to take applications. Dean Duggar stated that the Department Chair and himself need to meet - do we want to use for recruiting or retention.

$22M – Infrastructure money – wish list last Fall $40M last fall and $20M this spring. So we need to request what we didn’t get last fall. Chairs need to know what is on the list that has not been acquired and let Jon know how to proceed with ordering things. Today we received the balance for the technology fees for faculty computers. Look at needs and let Dean know. Probably could do another round of 2-3 in each department. Give priorities too. This is the money that can only be used for faculty computers and monitors.

Dr. Roe reminded the committee of the Barry Melancon breakfast and talk. Reception on Friday March 22nd from 11-12 in BU105 to meet and greet Barry.

April 12, 2002 – First Annual Treasury Management Seminar.

Dr. Frey discussed problem of two students asking why Business Calculus is not being offered in the summer and the catalog says spring, fall and summer. Dr. Seydel will check into this.

Dr. Frey commented that both he and Mark listened to a band at the Rotary Pot ‘O Gold that was rated Arkansas’ #1 Band and they cost $3000 for a Saturday night. They can play ‘50, ’60 and 80’s dance, boogie woogie and but less ballroom. There are 9-10 band members and they have a horn section. We might consider this band for the next Emerald Gala.

    DELTA CENTER FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Mark Young reported that their computer labs have been updated. A Grand Opening will be set up and Mark will let us know when. Web site to be up and running about April 1st. They are going to host a seminar on the 6th and 7th of June and will give more information about this later.

    Meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

Next scheduled meeting is April 3, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. in the College of Business Conference Room BU105.
