TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT CRITERIA have been developed within the context of a two-dimensional matrix. One dimension has to do with the stages in information use. The first stage is Data Gathering, the second stage is Data Processing, and the third stage is Data Presentation. The second dimension looks at four basic levels of technology use. The lowest level assumes only a basic awareness and minimal use of technology. The highest level to some extent might only be achieved by those courses which are explicitly technology based (e.g. MIS, AIS, Operations Management courses). To some extent the levels run from the primarily passive interaction to explicit development. The criteria developed are not necessarily limited to computer technology but might be applied to any business technology (i.e., they might include calculators, fax machines, or overhead projectors).

LEVEL I

The class teaches/requires basic awareness of technology.

Data Gathering: Ability to activate technology: turn on calculator, computer, copier, etc and use non-programmable features, perform basic math functions on a calculator.

Data Processing: Ability to activate software tools; start software, use a menu, start Windows, use a mouse to start software, use technology functions, use reduce/enlarge options on copier.

Data Presentation: Watch a technology based presentation, i.e., video, non-interactive PowerPoint presentation.

LEVEL II

The class teaches/requires ability to use basic technology features.

Data Gathering: Use of fill-in the blank software. Use simple web-page editor by answering simple questions; use online/electronic resources such as online library catalog, Internet browser perform simple query of databases specifying a query for use with an Internet search engine; specify a query for a library search.

Data Processing: Course specific applications (already developed model) similar to what might come with basic textbooks; communicate electronically via E-mail.

Data Presentation: Hard copy output; word processing output.

LEVEL III

The class will teach/require the ability to use advanced features or build complex models.

Data Gathering: Ability to write filter rules, separate E-mail into different incoming folders automatically; run an overnight Internet search software, integrate several sources, combine information and output from sources such as spreadsheets, word processing, Internet search results, online journals.

Data Processing: Ability to design a model, implement a finance model using a spreadsheet, exploit advanced features of a software package using file transfer and mailing lists in E-mail software; develop links between different files of different software packages.

Data Presentation: Electronic presentation using multi-media PowerPoint slide show; use sound and video files in an HTML presentation.

LEVEL IV

The class will teach/require the use of technology to present the result of creative problem solving.

Data Gathering: Primary data collection using electronic resources; survey research with Usenet newsgroups.

Data Processing: Incorporate multiple models and multiple spreadsheets which solve parts of the problems linked together. Create on new computing environments and the writing of new productivity software; analyze and design complete systems.

Data Presentation: Construct an online-interactive presentation and an interactive presentation about a company.
