The meeting was called to order by Dr. Bill Roe at
2:05 p.m. Dean Duggar was not able to convene the meeting
as he was in Morocco for the Middle East Studies Committee.
Dr. Dearman attended the meeting as Chair of the Outreach
Committee for his department and gave a report of activities.
He stated that the Gala made a $5300.00 profit. He also
stated that there was some discussion of whether to
have the Gala in the Spring or in the Fall. It appears
that in the Spring there are so many other charitable
events going on and some people felt that it would be
better to have it in the Fall. However, Dr. Dearman
commented that everyone is used to it being held in
the Spring now. There was a good turnout for the Business
Expo. Dr. Dearman also reminded the committee that the
Golf Tournament is Friday. Dr. Dearman also stated that
the committee discussed the Domain Statement of the
Outreach Committee – discussing exactly what the
committee is and does.
High School Competition – SIFE (Students in Free
Enterprise) program. This program was discussed by the
committee. Dr. Frey commented that it costs $30,000
for the program but it was corporate sponsored. Students
spent 1 week on campus and then went to Washington.
In 1980-81 there were 75 students on campus in teams
of 6 – they were

given a business simulation for a period of about 5
to 10 years, they were to turn in their decisions 2-3
times a day, multi-media presentation, television commercial
(outside people would come in and evaluate). Speakers
came in and talked about different topics. We need someone
who’s willing to do this kind of program. Free
Enterprise Week – Boys State and Girls State for
Business. Dr. Frey headed this program at Nichols State
and Dr. Roe did too in the 90’s. Dr. Dearman suggested
getting the classes involved. The question was asked:
what were the minimum requirements to get into the program
at Nichols State and Dr. Frey commented that the recommendation
of the sponsoring school carried a lot of weight and
it is an Honors Program. Dr. Roe stated that we need
a high energy person in the business college.
PLANNING ISSUES - REPORTS
Students – Dr. Nonis
1. Come up with a team with some kind of slogan. Must
be supported with statistics. Talk about small class
sizes (give comparisons of similar colleges). 30% of
our students are above the 70% percentile in MFAT, so,
that’s about 1/3 of our students. Students are
interested in specialization/certification programs.
Dr. Bevill and Dr. Nonis collected surveys of internship
students and they were very satisfied. Remedial courses
for weaker students. Out of 8 students that took the
MFAT scored in the 2nd percentile.
2. Improve academic atmosphere. Trying to make the
best use of the resources we have. Classrooms should
be clean and comfortable and professors should look
professional. We expect students to be professional,
therefore; instructors should look professional. Treatment
of students should be friendly but professional. Keep
office hours and have door open during office hours.
Environment – make it look welcome, professional,
academic, etc.
Get a building committee together.
3. Get academically superior students more involved
in state and national contests/awards. Attempt to provide
more real life experiences for students (field trips,
guest speakers, internships, international travel, etc.)
Remember, sole motivator is not money. Find creative
ways of rewarding instructors.
If we have additional funds…….

Dr. Roe would like to see a committee for students;
things to motivate, recognize and focus on the students,
such as; maybe a cookout in front of the building, student
appreciation day, donut day. Need to do something for
the night students as well, not just daytime students.
Dr. Nonis commented that his marketing students would
like to have more interaction with the faculty.
Dr. Replogle discussed students working in teams in
statistics class – so many can’t meet and
can’t work together. What can he do. Dr. Nonis
feels it’s because the grade for the team project
is only worth 1/6 of their grade, not enough to motivate
them.
Faculty – Dr. Replogle and Dr. Seydel
Technology training – try to target our technology
training toward a particular strategic goal, not just
people randomly picking. Have request made by faculty
member or chair. Has Dean communicated the Horizon Institute
of Technology to the department? Dr. Roe – what
we envision doing through the institute is to have a
team in each of the different areas of the Institute.
Curriculum Issues – Dr. Frey
Don’t have information ready yet
Development Plan – Mark Young
Alan Decker stated that Mark will discuss this at the
next meeting.
Recruiting – Carleen
Carleen discussed the Allegiance Program – it
is a wonderful program and when talking to the students
during Sr. Preview Day, they don’t know about
the program but are excited about it after Carleen tells
them about it. We need to promote this program more.
International Program is also a good program. High school
students don’t know that they would pay the same
amount of money. Various recruiting efforts for high
school students were discussed but the Outreach Committee
didn’t seem interested – they wanted to
focus more on students who have already contacted us.
During Business Expo – Winn area said that they
were going to do a Business Fair and wanted to know
if we would be interested. Carleen was interested but
the Outreach Committee wasn’t for it. Trying to
think of something cost effective to do. Dr. Bevill
said that the community college fair was good. Carleen
commented that the interactive things that we did at
the last fair was enjoyed by the students. We need a
brochure on the Allegiance Program – maybe Cardinal
would help.

Dr. Roe stated that the Viewbook was ready and Dr.
Roe has seen it. Dr. Roe would like to see something
nice and glossy to focus on the Allegiance Program.
Dr. Nonis
commented that the students want opportunities and
we need to find a way to provide that. Carleen informed
the committee of an idea that she had - formulate a
postcard that could be sent to high school students
that has on the card what we’re doing, wish you
were here – something like that. Dr. Nonis suggested
that when students go abroad to put this on the web
site and show pictures of the students. Carleen stated
that she has 455 high schools in the database. She would
like to send out quarterly newsletters to these high
schools and the Outreach Committee didn’t agree.
Carleen also commented that we hold Etiquette dinners
and she would like to have an international etiquette
dinner for the students. Since students are going abroad,
it would be good for them.
HONORS BANQUET COMMITTEE
Dr. Replogle commented that people should not be standing
outside in the hall. Honors Committee will meet to make
it better. Entertainment was suggested. Dr. Frey commented
that Guy Pattison would come in for free.
STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
Dr. Roe suggested taking the existing Strategic Plan
and breaking it up into more functional areas of responsibility.
He said he will do this and get it out to everyone soon.
FACULTY MERIT DOCUMENT
Dr. Roe stated that we need to get the Faculty Merit
Document out to the faculty, so if there aren’t
any changes, then we need to go ahead with it. Did not
change the requirements but clarified what we mean by
the standards.
RECRUITMENT/OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
Carleen announced that Friday, May 3rd is Donut Day.
Dr. Roe suggested a Pancake Supper for students during
finals. Dr. Frey said it’s already being done.
Lynita Cooksey would be the person to contact.
Carleen needs photogenic students for the viewbook.
Joe Bork stated that there are 14 teams registered
for the Golf Outing and tee off is at 12:00 and lunch
is at 11:00.
The web site for the Delta Center for Economic Development
is:
deltaced.astate.edu and the newsletter went out this
week.
