p.m.
TECHNOLOGY
Dean Duggar distributed the proposal from Mark Hoeting
regarding minimum standards for desktop computers and
the second portion of the proposal is regarding voice
mail in relation to cost etc. Dr. Seydel stated that
this is just an example of a standard we should implement
and we should have a standardized college.
Building rewiring – in process of building closet
for rewiring of building. Sending out RFP for wiring
this building this week and there will be some time
before the building is actually rewired. Probably about
the middle of April and the rewiring should be completed
by summer.
Horizon Institute – still putting together an
advisory group in industry. If you know anyone that
we could invite, please let Dean Duggar know. Dr. Roe’s
MBA class is working on a Strategic Plan and they are
to give a progress report at the meeting scheduled for
Tuesday, February 26th, at the First Community Bank.
Dean Duggar met with Randy Pepper at Fed Ex and he is
in Fed Ex services and they do all the evaluation of
all the technology that is implemented at Fed Ex. He
is just the right person for this. AS400 is important
because most all the manufacturing plants here are using
400. Kathy White will be conducting the meeting. Asked
Kelly Fish to act as Chair or project leader for SAS
Program. He has invited Jim Ogelsby to come and be on
campus Friday, March 1st to talk with faculty about
what our software can do and go from there. CD Rom self-training
and have some training meetings. Dr. Seydel felt that
we need support from other departments as no one outside
his department has expressed any interest. Dean Duggar
would like to have Crystal and Mark’s shop involved.
Dr. Frey asked Dr. Nonis about data mining – what
other response can he get from the Marketing department.
Being short on faculty, that’s where the problem
is and there isn’t any flexibility in this. Dean
Duggar asked Dr. Nonis if he could evaluate SAS software
and see what the advantages and disadvantages are. Dr.
Nonis stated that for the curriculum and research purposes
we are dealing with SPSS or SBSS? and is that good enough.
However, if we are going to change, then that’s
fine, he’ll support it. Dr. Replogle stated that
as a college we only offer one statistical course and
students use Excel rather than a statistical package.
Most will not have access to a statistical package when
they leave college but they will have access to spreadsheets.
Think of this whole thing as a system, where do we want
to start as a first course etc. Maybe this should be
discussed in the curriculum committee. Dr. Seydel feels
that the more people we can get at the workshop on March
1st, the more likely we will be able to determine if
SAS is the direction we want to go or not. Kelly Fish
has all the information, so any comments or questions
should be directed to him.
Dean Duggar is not opposed to incentives to certain
activities. Need to be more open to helping people get
these skills as they are hard to learn on your own.
There was some discussion about the Accounting 150
hour course. Dr. Washam stated that there are three
meetings coming up and by the end of summer they should
have goals set for the catalog. The two he knows of
is the Masters in Accounting, and splitting the Undergraduate
Degree between a CPA Track and Management Accounting
Track.
MIS Masters Degree – finalize
Change in the accounting track to prepare students
for CPA exam.
MBA – restructuring MBA program with 1 to 2 hour
courses, replacing 3 hr courses.
Dean Duggar - Need something closer to a supply chain
management degree?
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENTS
MIS Masters Degree
Accounting Track
MBA restructuring
Supply Chain Management Degree?
Dr. Bevill discussed the Freshman course and asked
the committee what they see that needs to be done. Is
it worthwhile? Dr. Bevill feels that it is very worthwhile.
It is a good introduction to business and most of the
freshman were undeclared. Trying to get some stability
in the course from the faculty. Dr. Bevill is going
to go back to teaching this course. This course is supposed
to be for Freshman or undeclared majors. Dr. Frey doesn’t
see restricting to Freshman only. Some Sophomores and
Seniors are allowed to come to the class because they
come from Radio/TV etc and they need to be in this class.
Freshman Experience class acclimates freshman to the
university. Incorporates reading a catalog, a special
notebook goes with it, time management, advising, how
to read a degree plan and acquaints them with the library,
etc. Dr. Nonis would like to look at a COB Freshman
Experience class.
Publications – Business Connection went out already.
The next issue is coming up and the theme is International
Focus. Carleen talked with Clint and told him what the
focus is.
Dean Duggar stated that all major brochures have arrived
and have been delivered.
Two other things that Dean Duggar would like to focus
on is; an overview booklet for the COB and he has asked
Carleen to work with a group on working on updating
the Web site.
Dean Duggar asked Mark Young if they have a web site
set up. Mark stated that they are working with a private
firm to help them get a new one set up. They have selected
a design and have given information to the firm and
it should be up and running by the 2nd week of March.
Dreamweaver software will be used and Crystal Blake
will be responsible for updating the site. Mark stated
that Carleen and John Seydel can call Crystal if they
need any help at any time. Netmobile meeting is set
for Friday. Hank Czarnecki will be on the board as well.
Carleen stated that a printed list of the COB courses
has been printed from the Web – Summer I and Summer
II courses. Dr. Frey stated that some courses have been
added so he told Carleen to make sure that she has the
most current off the Web.
Dr. Washam has a new web site up and running and their
brochure is on-line.
Dean Duggar wants the University to have design, college
flows into that, departments etc.
MBA Brochure - it’s moving – finally got
some pictures Dr. Roe liked.
UPDATE ON MERIT EVALUATIONS
Due February 18th
Student Teaching Evaluation: Make sure we have a college
wide scoring and department scoring. Testing Center
should be able to batch all department scores together.
Dr.
Seydel does his early in the semester so faculty can
have them before they leave for the summer. Dr. Frey
does theirs in the mid-term. National Service –
national avg for the course and discipline, university
avg, college avg and course avg. – they could
do this if we used them. Dr. Seydel feels that he doesn’t
agree with evaluating in the middle of the semester.
Administer in the same three-day time frame.
Dean Duggar needs self-evaluations by Monday, February
18th.
Capital Campaign – Dean Duggar has a meeting
Monday afternoon to look at the bigger brochure. Straly
Snipes is working on this. Contacts are continuing and
going well. Meeting with Dr. Wyatt on February 18th
to talk about the campaign and the time frame for regional
meetings. Henry Jones to set up meeting with well-known
figures. Falling back a little on the schedule and it
may be April before we have a silent kick-off.
Mark Young and Dean Duggar met with one of the local
advertising firms and talked about having an outside
professional but it came back so expensive. We need
a full-time person involved with the campaign. Christy
Valentine was one person and talking with Mark Lewis,
Development Office – talking with them about the
importance of having a full-time person on this campaign.
Need faculty to attend Alumni Meetings around the area.
COB Alumni Group is up to about 37 members.
Dr. Seydel stated that Phone-a-Thon Week is next week
for EDS. Dr. Washam already did their week in January.
Dr. Roe – Aaron Lubin – March 5th –
remind faculty and encourage students to attend.
Barry Melencon will be here on March 22nd and will
be talking at The Collonade from 7-8 a.m. Breakfast
and talk 8-10 a.m. – will receive CPE credits
for the talk. Registration for the CPE credits is very
inexpensive. He will be talking on response to Enron
collapse. Following that, he will be on campus for a
reception at the COB. $35 including breakfast and $10
for students. Dr. Frey - possible to have HR classes
get credit for going to the talk. Dr. Replogle suggested
maybe requiring students to attend a certain number
of these talks.
Mark Young - Delta Center completed a grant with Enterprise
Corp. of the Delta. Will bring about ¼ million
dollars to the program if approved. They are behind
in training revenue about 15% due to the economy. They
are trying to do more individualized classes rather
than company classes right now. Received $23,000 to
redo computer training labs. Joe Bork was in a meeting
in California about two weeks ago and Mark told him
to take an extra day and visit the University there
regarding their 3rd party AS400 programs.
Seminar on Cash Management will be held on April 12th.
Meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
