Computer Proficiency Exam for the ASU College of Business

All students pursuing one of the degrees offered by the ASU College of Business (CoB) must demonstrate proficiency in the computer applications commonly used in Business organizations.  These applications generally include the standard personal productivity programs that involve database, spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation applications.  Currently, the most common software for these applications is the Microsoft Office suite including Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

The CoB recognizes two ways for a student to demonstrate the required computer proficiency.  One way, the recommended option, is for the student to complete CIT 1503 Microcomputer Applications (or an equivalent course), with a grade of C or better.  The other means of demonstrating proficiency is for the student to pass the CoB computer proficiency exam (ProfExam).

At present, the exam is being conducted on an appointment basis, where we need 24 hours lead time to make the appropriate arrangements. The ProfExam is a 4-hour hands-on test consisting of 5 modules, one each for Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint plus an integrative module.  Each module must be passed with a grade of 70% or better.  The exam has been developed in conjunction with the Microsoft MOS exam objectives, which also form the basis of instruction for CIT 1503.  Therefore, the student is encouraged to prepare for the ProfExam by reviewing material in the textbook like those used for CIT 1503.  Such textbooks are available for checkout from the CIT Department.

Each of the five ProfExam modules is independent from the others.  Hence, if a student doesn't have sufficient time to take the entire exam at one sitting, she/he may take four or fewer modules at any given time.  If a student fails a module, she/he may re-take that module after waiting at least a week.  Within each module, the student may, for any question/problem that is answered incorrectly, try again, either immediately or after having completed the other questions.

Currently there is no charge for taking the ProfExam.  To register for the exam, complete and submit the following form; you will receive a confirmation and possibly an alternate suggested date/time via email.  If you have further questions, please communicate with the CIT Department chair, John Seydel.
