Credit by Examination for Industry Certifications

CIT is a technical field, and many people have achieved portions of what we offer in our curriculum through on-the-job experience. If you have experience in a particular area of IT (e.g., in networking or programming) or if you have received training in some other manner, you may also have received industry certification through Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, CompTIA, or some other vendor.

Recognizing this, ASU offers "Credit by Examination" to students who have passed certain IT certification exams.  The cost for this is $20 per credit hour for the course involved.  (For example, substituting the CompTIA Network+ exam, N10-003, for CIT 2523 would cost $60.) Taking advantage of this opportunity would both exempt you from taking certain required courses and provide you with college credit for what you have learned through experience.

The courses currently eligible for credit through certification, along with the corresponding certification exams, are indicated in the following table. To apply for credit for certifications you've earned, complete the "Request for Credit by Examination" form.  You will also need to provide us with proof of your having passed the appropriate exams.  Upon receipt of these items, we will complete an "Evaluation of Examination for Credit" form.  Credit will then be granted upon our submission of that form, along with the proper fees, to the Dean's Office in the College of Business.

To obtain further information, please check with Professors John Seydel (BU 313) and/or Russ Jones (BU 205B) of the Department of Computer & Information Technology.
