Business
Information
Participating Businesses
Each year, over 100 students participate
in the College of Business internship program in local, national,
and international levels. Most of the time, businesses request
an intern each semester; as one intern completes an internship,
another begins.
Advantages to Businesses
- Employers
receive additional help to work on projects where regular
staff time is difficult to secure.
- Interns
bring new perspectives and suggestions and excitement
to their work. Some interns can use their skills to help
existing staff learn new skills and techniques.
- Students
receive 3 hours of college credit for their internship,
so they have an extra motivation to do the best job possible.
- Interns
bring an excitement to the business. The interns are students--usually
seniors but at least juniors--who have been studying their
field while in college. They are eager and excited about
having the opportunity to actually get "real world" experience
in their major.
- The
site supervisor has an opportunity to experience being
a mentor and helping students develop skills needed to
become professionals.
Responsibilities
of Site and Site Supervisors
By
agreeing to become an internship site, the site supervisor
agrees to provide the student with a minimum of 120 clock
hours in a job and/or department related to the student's
major.
For example, a student majoring
in MIS would do his/her internship in the MIS area of a
business while a student majoring in Marketing might be
at the same business in a different department.
The site supervisors are asked to
evaluate the students at least twice each semester. The
evaluation is one page and can be mailed or faxed back to
me.
Most of the firms compensate the
students either with an hourly wage or a stipend at the
end of the internship. Students are paying for three hours
of course work to be in the internship program, and they
especially appreciate a stipend that at least equals the
cost of receiving three hours credit.
At the end of the semester, the
interns will submit a paper to me about their internship.
I wish the site supervisors could read these papers. The
students very frequently express their appreciation for
the opportunity they have had and their deep respect and
appreciation for the direction and guidance their site supervisors
provided.
The internship program usually is
a true win-win situation. The students gain valuable experience
related to their majors, and the businesses get an employee
with current skills and who is eager to learn.
Please call me or
email me
if you
have any questions. We would love to have you participate
in the College of Business Internship program.
