What is Finance?
Finance involves making decisions about the
future. Corporate financial managers determine the optimal
levels of cash, short-term investments, accounts receivable,
and fixed assets to support the firm's future operations.
Corporate financial managers also analyze the options for
financing these assets.
Other finance majors choose to work in the area of investments.
Stock brokers and financial planners assist individuals
and companies in planning for the future. Investment professionals
analyze both the present and future environment of the client
and the alternative investments available to meet the needs
of the client.
Finance graduates are also involved in banking, making lending
decisions that will allow businesses to operate and grow,
and meet the funding needs of individuals. As a result of
their activities, loan officers also manage portfolios of
loans that represent assets of the financial institution.
Real estate and insurance are also areas of finance. Finance
graduates may be making decisions about a company's investment
properties or the best financing alternatives for the acquisition
of real estate. Graduates with an emphasis in insurance
may be advising individuals and companies about their risk
management needs, or they may be involved in risk management
for a particular firm.
