Special Problems (undergraduate) and Directed/Independent Study
(graduate) courses are designed to provide the exceptional student with
the opportunity to study topics not ordinarily examined in existing courses, or
at least not treated in an in-depth manner in existing course offerings. A Special
Problems / Directed Study course must culminate in a term paper or project. The minimum GPA (for
all coursework at ASU) to qualify for Special Problems / Directed Study is 3.00.
To obtain
approval to enroll in Special Problems / Directed Study, you must complete this form and attach a
Course Information summary. That summary must include the
following: (1) the course subtitle; (2) a course description; (3) a list of
required texts and course readings; (5) a brief description of the term paper or
project the student will be undertaking; (6) a statement concerning the method
used to determine the final grade; and (7) the instructor's signature.
