Center for the Study of Automatic Identification
Director:  Farhad Moeeni, Ph.D.
  • Our mission:
We seek to expound upon and to extend the application of various automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technologies through academic curricula, technology transfer, and applied research.

  • What is AIDC?
    • AIDC is the use of a variety of means for avoiding the manual recording and entry of data.  While the vast majority of information processing these days is automated for the sake of efficiency and quality, so much of the capture and/or entry of data is still performed manually.  This inconsistency is rapidly being recognized in industry and is driving the current movement for the widespread adoption of RFID and other AIDC technologies.  These technologies are therefore unique in that they are business-driven technologies.
    • Technologies for data capture include
      • Bar coding
      • RFID
      • Biometric sensors
      • Smart cards

  • Decision making model
    • Information flow:
      • Data capture (keyboarding, AIDC, . . . )
        • Data management (databases, etc.)
          • Analysis and decision support (data mining, OR, . . . )
    • Support for the flow
      • Applications programs:  process the data into usable information
      • Networking:  provides the connectivity

  • Academic roles
    • Science & engineering initially has pioneered the basic research involving AIDC
    • Now:  Business (starting @ ASU, then UA) is addressing cost reduction, quality improvement, consumer behavior, and numerous other aspects

  • Partners:  We realize that we can't do this alone, so we are seeking to establish partnerships with others at the forefront of AIDC. Such organizations with whom we have already been involved include the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) and the University of Arkansas, Little Rock. We are seeking to work with other universities, government agencies, and industries so please check with us to discuss opportunities.
